Veins are the highways of the body. They carry blood pumped by the heart along a network of “roads” (arteries and veins) to bring oxygen to all parts of the body. The body’s natural movement helps pump blood back to the heart, which sends it out again in a continuous cycle.
All veins have valves that act like traffic signals, opening and closing to make sure blood is always flowing the correct direction. Varicose veins are veins with broken valves. In a varicose vein, blood flows backward and stays in the vein. This causes the vein to expand, stretch, and become twisted, which prevents it from circulating blood effectively.

Some patients are bothered by the way varicose veins look, while others experience itching, pain, and tiredness in their legs.

What is Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy (EVLT)?
Endovenous laser ablation therapy (EVLT) is a minimally invasive procedure that makes use of catheters, lasers, and ultrasound to treat varicose veins. This procedure is performed most often on veins that are still relatively straight and untwisted.
The EVLT procedure begins with an interventional radiologist inserting a catheter into the varicose vein. Using ultrasound to see inside the patient, the doctor guides the catheter through the vein. A laser at the end of the catheter heats the walls of the vein, which closes it. This causes blood to stop flowing through the vein.
As the body recovers after the procedure, circulation becomes more efficient since blood is not flowing through a faulty vein and the problem vein shrinks and fades.










After your scan your leg will be cleaned before a tiny amount of anaesthetic is applied (using super fine needles). A catherer is inserted into the vein and the Endovenous Laser fibre is inserted. After this a cool anaesthetic is then applied around your vein to protect surrounding tissues. You will then be required to wear goggles before the laser machine is switched on. During the procedure the laser will be pulled back to seal the faulty vein. Rarely will patients experience any discomfort when the laser is being used. After the procedure you will be required to wear stockings for 5-7 days and walk half an hour a day. Long distance travel is not permitted for 4 weeks. Your leg may feel numb for six hours after the procedure. A follow-up appointment is required for all patients. At this appointment further treatment may occur with ultrasound guided sclerotherapy.
The entire procedure, from start to finish, takes about an hour, and there is very little or no pain. Another advantage of
treating varicose veins with EVLA is that most insurance plans and Medicare cover it.
Endovenous laser ablation treatment is a remarkably safe, effective, and virtually painless procedure for the treatment of varicose vein and spider veins. As with any procedure, there can be side effects or complications, so it is imperative to have the procedure performed by a highly qualified specialist vein doctor.
Prolonged idleness for more than 30min should be avoided. Walking around the office and standing up on your toes is recommended at work. Regular exercise routines may be resumed after 2 weeks from the procedure. You should not fly in an airplane for 1 month after EVLT.
